8 months

The photo shoot pretty much resembles Collier's life right now.  What can I play with and, possibly, destroy?
Look how cute his little face is when he's been "caught in the act" of crumbling up his 8 month sticker?

These days we are working on crawling (maybe by 9 mths?), waiving hello and goodbye, eating small chunks of food with our pencil grippers, and saying "mama" and "dada".  And the important goal of upping our platelet count... our next appointment is next week... wish us luck!

Cheating?

Do you get the Bed Bath and Beyond coupons for 20% off regularly?  Do you use them?  A story for you... I really wanted a Vitamix for my birthday, but on the coupon it says that the 20% off can't be used for certain brands, ie. Vitamix.  So, Patrick ordered another juicer/blender online using the coupon, therefor saving him roughly $60.  I returned this blender saying that it was a gift with no receipt.  They gave me the full price for it.  I exchanged it for a Vitamix and used another 20% off coupon on it.  (Even though it clearly says it can't be used on a Vitamix, they excepted it anyways... always pays to try!)  When all was said and done, BB&B actually owed us money!  Crazy.

Another story... do you shop at The Limited?  No?  Me neither.  In fact it's probably been 15 years since I've been into that store.  But, my in-laws gave me NorthPark Gold for my birthday, so I was doing some window shopping one day.  (My rule with NP Gold is to always use it on something I wouldn't typically buy for myself.)  On this particular Tuesday, The Limited was having a Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale on their skirts, shorts, and cropped pants.  I found a skirt I adored, but really couldn't find anything else, so I walked out of the store empty handed.  I told a friend about it, who said that we could get 2 of the same skirt (one for her, one for me) and each pay 1/2 the cost.  The next day the sale was gone.  On this day they now had the skirt marked down 40%... still good, but not as good as the Tuesday sale.  So, I waited.  The next Tuesday I checked again online.  They were having a Buy 1, Get 1 Free off everything in the store!!  I bought the skirt... at the 40% discounted price... plus got another dress for free!  And, the dress was more than the skirt, but that is somehow what they discounted.  Again, crazy!

This makes me think that there are more stores out there that have "sale" days.  Or that there are other ways of "cheating" the system.  Anyone else have any tips on shopping???

Our System

After mentioning this system to my neighbor (who has a 5 and 3 year old) and getting her response of "Why haven't you told me about this before???" coupled with reading my friend, Molly's, blog post about this same subject I figured I might as well write a post about our system.  Below are "Charlie's Chores" or a better term might be "Expectations".  My friend brought up a good question- Should kids get rewarded for things that you expect them to do?  My thought is, yes- at first.  Expectations need to be taught (and modeled) at first and after a while you can fade out the reward for said expectation.
The above chores, I think, are appropriate for 3 year olds.  Some of these things I know with 100% certainty that Charlie will do no matter what, such as using the toilet to potty.  Unfortunately, we are still struggling to teach the expectations of flushing the toilet and washing hands.  So, these 3 things are listed separately.  I also think it's important to include things on the list that your child will do 100% of the time... they will get a reward for these therefor increasing the chances that they will want a reward for the other things listed.

Below is our $$$ system, ie. beans.  I really didn't want to bother with real-life money yet.  Seems complicated for a 3 year old to pick up.  He sees the beans as his money and that is really what I was aiming for.  We use Melissa and Doug paint cups to store our money.  (It was something we had lying around that wasn't being used.)  The green cup stores the beans, blue is to SAVE, red is to SPEND, and yellow is to GIVE.

The rewards.  Occasionally I take Charlie to the Dollar Store and he gets to chose what rewards he will be working towards.  By letting it be his choice, I know he actually wants these things and will work to get them.  Judging on his enthusiasm for these objects I place a dollar amount on them.  All dollar amounts are in 10's.  Easier counting, Charlie learns math skills in that he is learning to count by 10's.

Each week he starts off with 5 beans... think of it as his allowance... he gets them no matter what.  Every day we go through his chores and we decide as a family how we think he did overall on his chores.  (His opinion counts too!)  At the end of the week he can decide where his money goes... to spend, to save, or to give.  The giving is tricky.  I usually require him to put a couple of beans in that cup.  But, he seems to have picked up the spending vs. saving.  If he want a toy that is 40 beans, but he has 30 then he really will wait to get the toy he really wants.  Oh, and also- no taking beans away!  Not even for bad behavior.

So, what do we do for good/bad behavior on an everyday basis?  We have "Happy Sticks" and "Sad Sticks".  If I noticed that Charlie actually flushed the toilet or washed his hands after pottying then he might get a reward stick for this.  The best part is, you as the parent, can pick out as many or as few sticks that he can pick from.  All sticks being appropriate rewards for that action.
Same goes for Sad Sticks.  Sometimes, there just isn't a logical consequence for something that Charlie has done.  Such as- yesterday Charlie intentionally peed on a friend at school.  (WTH??)  We had a discussion about how it's not nice to tee tee on friends, but to drive the point home Charlie had to draw a Sad Stick.  (Which happened to be that he didn't get a popsicle... which was the sad stick that I wanted him to get.)
Please share- what's your system??

Family Photo Shoot

Our family photo shoot over Memorial Day weekend was done by a great photographer.  If you are in Dallas and looking for someone reasonable with great patience Elizabeth Sostizzo was awesome!  We were at the Arboretum for 2 hours on a Saturday morning (read: packed!) with all 13 of us in tow.  I think she got some good shots given all of the obstacles!

Spicewood for the 4th

Thanks for coming, friends.  It was a fun time had by all!

34th Birthday in Review

Our birthday is always a little hectic with 4th of July being the next day and all.  But, this one was just perfect.  I got to go to a yoga class and got to go out to eat at Cane Rosso with my family.  (These two things rarely happen these days, so I consider them a treat!)
I also got some needed/wanted birthday gifts.  First up, from Patrick, was my new Vitamix!  I've been wanting this for a while now (since we went to our juicing class last August at Travaasa Resort).
From my mom and dad, I got my new Le Cruiset pot that I have been wanting.  For some reason, when Patrick and I got married, we didn't register for new cookware.  I have no idea what I was thinking!  (And had no idea how much I would actually be cooking at home).
From Bob and Ann I got Northpark gold... always a favorite gift of mine!!  (For those who don't know, you can get gold, kind of like a gift certificate but in the form of gold coins, and can spend it anywhere in Northpark Mall!)  And, thank you for a fun birthday dinner as well!

From friends, I got a cute pair of gold earrings and a great, new cookbook which has quickly become my new obsession!  What does it mean that 99% of my gifts have to do with food???

Platelet Count #8

I *think* we turned a corner today!!  Little man's count was up to 49,000!!!  This is a huge improvement from the 8,000 we have been working with for the past few months.  The doctor is hopeful that this is the beginning of the recovery stage for Collier's ITP.  (He did say that it could also be due to the fact Collier is getting over an illness... he's been stuffy, stuffy for the past week or so.  It could be the body's way of boosting platelets to get him over the illness hump, then when he's illness free the platelts could drop again.)  But, I'm hopeful that it is really recovery from ITP!  That's what I'm going with anyways.

The plan is still to hold off on Collier's 6 month shots (even though he's 7.5 mths now) and to go back in 4 weeks for another count.  If all looks good then, Collier will be cleared to begin Mother's Day Out and our appointments could be stretched to every 2 months!  Fingers crossed!!

Happy Birthday!

To my favorite sister!

I read this post from an amazing writer about wishing her twin a Happy Birthday... it starts out beautifully and exactly how I think of Julie's and my relationship.  "This girl ... where do I even begin? It's impossible to describe the bond shared between twins. I've tried to explain it to people before but just struggle. Likening it to one of my favorite quotes is sometimes easier. "Séjour avec moi, je veux être seul," which translates "Stay with me, I want to be alone."

Julie is the person I call first when I have something happy or heartbreaking to share, when I want to vent or brag, and who I just want to talk to to make my day better.  Sometimes, this means we talk 2-3 times per day!  Wish she were closer, phone calls fewer, and time spent together more!  Here's to 34, friend.
